Q: What methods do you use to evaluate the success of your senior staff?
A: Developing senior staff is one of the most important roles of the CIO. I invest at least twenty five percent of my time mentoring and coaching senior staff members. To evaluate their success and development, I use a biannual 360-degree evaluation process. I ask several direct reports, key clients and peers inside and outside the department to evaluate each staff member. I share the feedback from that process with them, along with my own suggestions and observations. We use those biannual evaluations to develop specific annual and semiannual goals and to agree on key performance targets and indicators. I provide regularly weekly feedback on how each senior staff members is doing against those goals and KPIs.
